Choose the right light
Compact Fluorescent Lights come in many shapes and sizes. It is important to choose the right light for the application so you aren't disappointed!

CFLs work best in open fixtures such as floor and table lamps, sconces, pendants, and outdoor fixtures that allow airflow.

CFLs also come in warm or cool light just like incandescent bulbs. For task lighting, such as over a work space or desk, use a cool color.  For general home lighting look for warm light.

Also be sure to choose the right wattage. Though labeled differently that incandescent lights, most CFLs have the incandescent equivalent on the label which will help you transition. Look for bulbs that say "60 watt equivalent" or "replaces a 40 watt bulb".  You can also check the lumen rating to find the right CFL. The higher the lumen rating, the greater the light output.  Energystar.gov provides a chart to help with the transition, see right.
